Charles Spurgeon and his wife, according to a story in the Chaplain magazine, would sell,but
refused to give away, the eggs their chickens laid.
Even close relatives were told, "You can have them if you pay
for them." As a result, some people labeled the Spurgeons as “greedy and grasping.”
They accepted the criticisms without
defending themselves, and only after Mrs. Spurgeon died was the full story revealed. All the profits from the sale of eggs went to support two elderly widows.
Because the Spurgeons were unwilling to let their left hand know what the right hand was doing (Matthew 6:3), they endured the attacks in silence—Chaplain Magazine.
When we look at the earthly ministry of Jesus, we see that he exemplified the
gift of giving!
Giving to others is a way of showing love and compassion. A selfless act shows the world
true love and compassion. Telling someone that you love him or her holds no comparison to actually giving of your time, talent, treasure, or life to someone.
Treasure we define as “money.” Not only is this a popular subject of discussion in the church, but it’s written about in the Bible often, as well. Jesus spoke often about it. But there’s confusion.
People are quick to reproof others biblically, but the following two verses seem to contradict each other:
“The love of money is the root of all evil,” or, “Poverty is a curse.”
One side of the “coin” says that poverty is a curse and you should be rich if you are a Christian, while the other side proclaims that being rich is a sin and you should accept poverty and lack as proof of your holiness.
